You are building in Anguilla!
So you are building!!!
Congratulations!
So, how do you get inspired as you set about creating your island home or vacation getaway? If inspiration is not immediate, I invite you to look a little closer at the nuances, rhythms and textures that compose the island dream.
Colour: With the absence of changing seasons, a well put together colour scheme would be pleasant and enjoyable all year round. The clarity of the tropical sun ensures that colours are crisp and true. Because of this, strong colours can be even more intense and energetic. For the changing moods of the year: Easter, Carnival, Thanksgiving and Christmas, you will be served well with a scheme for all seasons. While remaining true to the vibrancy of the tropics, you may want to balance the high energy of strong colours with the soothing tones of a neutral palette.
If you need some encouragement in the bold use of color, consider the following: the unapologetic coloration of traditional houses; the Anguilla racing boats and the fishing boats lying in wait along the shores; the flamboyance of the Flame tree when in bloom during the month of July… Consider, too, the riot of colour that is spilled with abandon onto the streets during the Carnival festivities in August. Consider the assemblage of tropical fruit on roadside stands. In the heat of the noon sun, take a look at the ocean for a study of blues. At dawn and at sunset, yellows, oranges, reds, plums and purples in their varying shades shriek across the sky.
Rhythm and Texture: Life in Anguilla is rather laid back and uncomplicated and your home could reflect this simplicity and casualness. Natural materials communicate this very clearly: wood, wicker, rattan, cotton, jute. Certain objects also resonate island life such as a weathered bench at the dining table; the presence of a coal pot which is for more than just decoration; a vitrine that showcases serving ware that is too precious for everyday use. Of course, nautical references go without saying. The ‘less is more’ principle still obtains. Touches of sea life are preferable to the ubiquitous presence of shells and paintings of fish in every room. To avoid the look of a room designed by a beach combing tourist, you may want to consider the judicious use of shells and paintings of sea life. Hint at your new seafaring life by creating accent walls of turquoise or deep sea blues. Billowy white cotton drapery conjures up images of sail boats. New furniture placed alongside more weathered pieces speaks of the harmonious intermingling of contrasts on this side of the world.
And of course, always, there is a lot of room for individual expression! From the colour of your roof to the design of your shutters … Have fun while designing your home!
