Bankie Banx Dune Preserve Rocks to British Dependency Live Music on Sundays!

Anguilla is a great place to be on a glorious Sunday afternoon as many of the beaches and beach cafes buzz with mellow activity. On a Sunday afternoon, Bankie Banx’ Dune Preserve on Rendezvous Bay is a great hang out spot where visitors and residents lime, dine in gourmet-beach casual style and listen to the great sounds of British Dependency – the hottest new musical group on the island.
The principal behind British Dependency is the composition and arrangement of music from an afro-centric approach in which the music is arranged from an emotional approach as opposed to mere notes and chords. The group leans on heritage of the African diaspora and well as its roots in the West Indies culture and blends the sounds of Africa and the sounds of the Western hemisphere ’s African diaspora as it has been cultivated for many years.
The name British Dependency comes from the fact that all members of the group come out of current or former British dependent territories, Dominica , St Kitts-Nevis and Anguilla . Lead singer guitarist Ruel Richardson of Kittician-Anguillian heritage, Darius James is Dominican, and Jonathan Warrington comes out of Dominica . The current format came together one year ago and immediately gelled, with James and Warrington providing a solid and creative backbone for Richardson to lay his lyrics and his melodies over. It is also relevant to note that Richardson is a guitar player of the highest order and is most definitely one of the best, if not the best guitar player in the Caribbean in modern times and has been compared to The Great Ernest Rangling of Jamaica in terms of his uniqueness of chord structure, styling and sensitivity.
British Dependency will be departing Anguilla on February 14 to cut its debut album. The group’s return and subsequent album release is highly anticipated. The group makes its foray in Bennett’s Studio with the support and encouragement of Anguilla Music Production and Publishing (AMPP) and its West Indie Records label. On hand to oversee the production for the album will be Davon Carty and Mitch Maketansky. The Musical Director will be Michael Carvin and Recording and Mixing Engineer will be Dae Bennett. On a very cool Sunday afternoon, we were summoned to the Dune by King Bankie to deliver additional Greenheart planks for his latest project. While there, and noting that we are not quite social creatures, he invited us into his rustic kingdom for a round of drinks and to experience British Dependency. The place was abuzz and everyone was, without a doubt, having a fabulous time. As British Dependency “virgins”, we were immediately impressed. They offer an eclectic, yet soothingly addictive sound rooted in afrocentric influence. Head-swaying and foot-tapping were inevitable. We wish them nothing but the best as they depart to represent Anguilla, and the Caribbean, with their earthy vibes and rhythms. Kudos to Davon, Mitch and the rest of their team…and of course, Bankie!
