ANGUILLA TOURIST BOARD & MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND CULTURE LAUNCH FESTIVAL DEL MAR 2010

The Valley, Anguilla , 2010 The Anguilla Tourist Board in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Culture and the Island Harbour community has this year begun the process of enshrining Festival Del Mar as an important festival on the Calendar of Events on the island. The Festival which usually falls during Easter Week-end (April 3 & 4 2010) had it’s seeds firmly planted some two years ago, has in most parts, evolved into what can be recognized, “as a full fledge event” and has done so much sooner than was anticipated.
The Festival is crucially important to the island from both a cultural and tourism perspective. The festival by its very nature has the potential for driving a two-fold process; (from a tourism angle) strategic use of the festival as a marketing tool while (culturally) that of “preserving a way of life for generations to come”. This year’s festival will see an addition of traditional conch shell blowing, (fish pot) funnel plaiting and rowing race. Other highlights of this year’s festival will be:
• 2nd annual Elliot Webster Memorial A class boat race ( Sunday April 4th )
• Deep sea fishing tournament
Along with the many sea activities planned for this year, the major entertainment will be string band music. And as usual patrons to the festival will have the opportunity to sample a variety of sea food dishes prepared by local vendors. This year the vendors understanding the challenging economic times have all agreed to a price control on all food and drinks sold at the festival.
