Runway Anguilla – “Charity for Community”
PRESS RELEASE
Fashion For The W.I.S.E. – Entertainment For All
Runway Anguilla announces the second edition of its annual fashion show aimed at raising funds to develop and assist community projects. Themed “Fashion for the W.I.S.E.”, all proceeds of the event will be donated to W.I.S.E. Anguilla, Workshop Initiative for Support in Education.
The show will take place on April 11, 2010 from 1 to 4 pm at the Aleta Restaurant of the Viceroy Resort & Residences, this year’s generous Platinum Sponsor. It will feature fashions from six island boutiques: Viceroy Boutique, ZaZAA, NVie, Irie Life, InStyle boutique and Bridal Affairs worn on the catwalk by a selection of local models. Young Shavaun Crawford, who already last year set the scene alight with his masterful miniature designs, will again have his own booth to display his latest creations. Musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Sugar, a light lunch will be served courtesy of Viceroy, and a silent auction will take place, with hotel stays, restaurant vouchers and the likes for everyone to claim.
Runway Anguilla is a non-profit committee of women who have come together to create a platform of support for the local business community through rotating charitable projects. It aims to promote primarily the fashion, culinary and entertainment industries on the island and to provide substantial financial aid to specific programs of social development in the process. Last year, Runway Anguilla successfully organized its first annual fashion show on behalf of St Gerard’s Catholic Church to contribute to the construction costs of its new church building. The event was a rotund success at all levels – commercially, financially, socially.
This year, the chosen beneficiary is W.I.S.E. Anguilla, an initiative promoted by the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School since September 2004 to shelter students at risk, with a practical inclination. Students are referred either by the ALHCS, by the Department of Social Development or are self-referred to tackle behavioural or academic challenges. In five years, W.I.S.E. has grown from being a pilot, part-time project for practical crafts, such as boat building, woodwork and ceramics, to imparting full-time tailored education to up to 100 students in areas ranging from IT to literacy and mathematics, although the focus of the initiative still is strongly anchored on trade workshops such as Technical Drawing and Engine Repair courses.
Encouraged by last year’s positive experience, when the show sold out days in advance, Runway Anguilla is excited about the potential contributions it might be able to afford to W.I.S.E. in 2010. The commitment displayed by Anguilla’s business community for our cause, from our major sponsors, such as Viceroy, this edition’s Platinum Sponsor, or Lime and Cuisinart Hotel, to individual table sponsors, too many to mention here, to the boutiques and businesses that have expressed their willingness to come onboard and be an active part of the event, we are certain to have all the ingredients necessary to make a memorable occasion. All we need now is the support of the general public to join us in helping a good cause, having a bit of fun and coming together for the surprise Grand Finale, which will, no doubt, leave more than one gasping for air.
