Shara wins at the Penn Relays

Anguilla’s world class athlete Ms. Shara Proctor continued her dominant ways when she competed in the 2010 Penn relays.  This much heralded event started in 1895, and has provided competition for more athletes than any other competition. Over the past ten years more than 100,000 athletes ranging from elementary schools to the armed services have competed in this 115 year old event.  Shara made some history of her own when she became the fifth person to win multiple titles at this meet.  In defending her 2009 title Shara jumped a distance of 6.46m/21-2.50 feet, consequently producing the ninth best long jump in the Penn Relay games and the best long jump since 2003.  Her victory also enhanced the long jump legacy of Florida University at the Penn relays with victories in 1979, 1982, 2009 and 2010.

On the 17^th of April, Shara won the triple jump with a leap of 13.29m/43-7.25 feet, at the Tom Jones Memorial track and field meet.  In the Florida relays which were held on the 2^nd of April Shara was shining as she jumped 6.63m/21-9 feet.  Her recent form has placed her and several of her team mates in contention for the Bowman award.  This is the highest award offered to collegiate track and field athletes.  At present Shara has the eight best long jump distance 6.63m / 21-9 feet in the world.

Anguilla will host the Leeward Islands under 15 Youth Championships

Anguilla will host the 2010 edition of the Leeward Island Youth track and field competition.  Athletes under age 15 from the sub region will be show casing their talents at the James Ronald Webster Park on the 22^nd and 23 of May.   Some of the events to be contested include the sprints, relays, middle distance races and field events such as long and high jump, shot put and javelin throws.  The two day event promises to be filled with exciting performances.  All members of the community are asked to come and support the event.
