Midwestern State University Caribbean Alumni awards Scholarships to young Anguillian Students.

In keeping with the concept of giving back to the Caribbean region, the Caribbean Alumni for Regional Progress has been making financial contributions to the Educational advancement of students in the region. Countries that are receiving awards this year are Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, ST. Kitts /Nevis, ST.Vincent and the Grenadines and Anguilla.  The two Anguillian students receiving the scholarships are Ms. Kiandra Benjamin and Mr. Delano Richardson, formerly of the Allwyn Allison Primary School.  Both students are now in first form of the ALHCS Campus B.  Both students were present with a check by Ms. Jo-Ann Webster a former student at Midwestern State University.  The students will use the $536.00 EC to procure books and other school supplies.  Mr. Bren Romney a member of the aforementioned body was instrumental in obtaining the scholarships for the Anguillan students.

This dream was made possible through an idea conceived by Dr. Randy Glean.  In the early 1990’s he started the Caribbean Students Organization which encouraged Caribbean Students to attend Midwestern State University (MSU) in Wichita Falls Texas.  Since then over 1000 Caribbean students have graduated from the University.  Almost 80% of those students have pursued Master’s degrees while at least 20% of that group has gone on to Doctoral degrees.  Many students have returned to the Caribbean region to help with their country’s development.

This small school offers several advantages to a student seeking their first degree.  The classes are not too large and it is very cost effective in comparison to other schools.  However the greatest benefit for a Caribbean Student attending Midwestern State University is the annual graduate school visits which are conducted by the Caribbean Students Organization (CSO) for seniors.

These visits give students the opportunity to visit graduate schools and examine programs that would be of interest to the pupils.  Some of these schools include, Stephan F. Austin University, the University of Alabama, the University of Texas, the University of Arkansas and Washington University in ST. Louis to name a few.   Here students can information to aid in making informed decisions as to which graduate school they can go to.  To find out more about this University and all other programs offered go to www.mwsu.edu
