Over 100 athletes take part in the AAAF one mile Classic
Over a hundred athletes participated in the season opening, one mile classic conducted by the Anguilla Amateur Athletics Federation. The athletes ran around the Agriculture Block in the warm Anguilla sun. Athletes of all ages participated and produced several splendid performances. The youngest age category, U9, whipped the small, appreciative crowd into a cheering frenzy as the little darlings bore the finished line. There was also much appreciation for the older Primary School children as they pushed each other to the limit.
However the adult male race garnered lots of interest as several Policemen from St. Martin and Anguilla tested their skills against some of Anguilla’s up and coming athletes. The two lap race started as a very brisk pace lead by one of the Policemen. Akaeme Mussington, a tall lanky middle distance runner played coy with the filed as he waited patiently for the field to separate. Like a leopard he sprang into action as he led the pack for the remaining 700m. His long strides and motorized cadence shattered the wills of his opposition as he easily pulled away from them. His nearest rival Nashaine Johnson, a former national athlete, endured some resistance from Rasheed Hodge (member of the Black and Gold training group). Nashaine’s experience proved vital as he outlasted the surge from his opponent to earn second place. The AAAF would like to thank the athletes and spectators for participating in and encouraging the athletes.
