ISLAND HOOPS: ANGUILLA BASKETBALL ACADEMY (IHABA) was started by Paul Bell and a team of friends and basketball enthusiasts, in May 2011. The IHABA purpose is to provide the best quality basketball instruction, training & development, year round to players of all ages and skill levels as well as to formulate a cohesive action plan for basketball now and in the future.
In addition to this the IHABA intends to facilitate basketball related events such as an after-school program, holiday clinics & camps, league & tournaments, individual player & team development and coaches training & certification. In the near future, IHABA is hoping to construct a simple, efficient and cost effective semi indoor facility, to enable the afore mentioned basketball related instruction, training & events.
IHABA is committed to working closely with the Anguilla Amateur Basketball Association, the Sports Directorate as well as other key local figures in the basketball milieu, to achieve its goals and take youth basketball to another level. The IHABA is intent on creating and implementing a cohesive plan to unify basketball efforts on Anguilla to improve the quality of instruction, development and achievement of long term goals.
This grassroots basketball initiative, primarily targeted towards the youth, is designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a true love of the game for basketball. This Academy, was inspired by the efforts of the Anguilla Tennis Academy, a local grassroots program that has been in operation for the past 16 years and has yielded great results. The IHABA want to support and empower youth in an effort to positively influence them through the sport of basketball. Thru their multifaceted efforts, the IHABA, will encourage participants to maximize their potential, while promoting basketball as a vehicle to build character, discipline and self-esteem. IHABA will provide complete instruction on all aspects of the game. The belief is that focused training is the best means through which a player can achieve significant and lasting improvement on his/her self and on the basketball court. Through experienced and comprehensive teaching, IHABA will provide these tools for improvement. We will give leadership, expertise, and support to athletes who simply want to become better people and better players. IHABA believes that hard work, attention to detail, and a positive attitude develop habits that serve as the foundation for improvement. While player improvement is the immediate aim, the commitment to overall development, on and off the court, is what will make IHABA a success. IHABA hopes to develop within athletes the ability to motivate themselves, and to teach them how to reach their potential not only as basketball players but also as positive members of society.
IHABA has an enthusiastic, skilled, and well-informed local team as well as a pool of overseas contributors, who have extensive knowledge of the game of basketball and academy administration. The team members recognize the importance of learning the fundamentals at a young age. More importantly, there is the shared belief in the merits of dedication, hard work, and positive thinking and the IHABA is committed to making each of these ideals an integral part of the programs. As a result of this commitment, young players will benefit from their influence not only by becoming better basketball players, but more importantly, by learning from positive role models.
The IHABA is the local chapter representative for the National Alliance of Youth Sports (www.nays.org), which is America’s leading advocate for positive and safe sports and activities for children. Thru this affiliation IHABA is committed to providing quality instruction not only to the youth but to coaches and parents, island wide, in an effort to promote a cohesive and positive approach to sport delivery, participation and support.
Basketball is already extremely popular on the island and it is the most popular and most viewed team sport in the world. It is the intent of IHABA, through this grass roots basketball initiative to take advantage of the excitement and interest nationally and internationally, to provide Anguillian youth with as many positive opportunities as possible, using the sport of basketball as a platform to achieve this.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
IHABA Founder and President:
Paul Bell is an Anguillian, who recently moved to the island after several years of study in Holland. Due to the recent birth of his daughter, with wife Mirabelle West, he decided to complete his BS (Hons) Sport and Health Sciences with a concentration in Coaching Studies for Basketball online. Paul completed his secondary education in St Maarten and was involved in basketball at a young age. An avid basketball enthusiast he transitioned from player to youth basketball coach with ease. Whilst in Holland, Paul worked closely with several of the leading basketball institutions including The Dutch Basketball Federation, the Dutch Men’s U16 National Team & UBALL (Utrecht Basketball Development Center) to name a few. Having made Anguilla his new home, Paul decided to give back to the community and share his acquired knowledge and experience through an innovative and basketball centric program that could benefit the youth and the game of basketball as a whole. With his extensive network of local & international basketball professionals, Paul hopes to create a state of the art basketball program here on the island.

HOW WE WILL DO IT:
The IHABA is currently run by a group of volunteers who donate their time towards the development of this grass roots program and the achievement of its goals.
IHABA is a registered NPO. The existence and operations of this initiative are solely dependent on the gracious and generous contributors of donors.
It is our aim at IHABA, to forge a strong and lasting relationship with our contributors who believe in the overall project. Support is not solely financial but also moral and that combination makes for a mutually beneficial partnership.
It is the hope of the IHABA that contributors understand that they are not only contributing to the “a moment in time” but are contributing to a direct youth development avenue and much is to be gained as a socially responsible contributor.
Please consider partnering with us and help us help the youth to AIM, ASPIRE & ACHIEVE!
